River Region Art Association Thrives in New Location Along the Mississippi River
My name is Betty Marks, and I am President of the River Region Art Association in Ascension Parish, LA. We are a group of approximately 90 artists who volunteer to promote art and artists through our association.
We exist only through donations, grants, percentage of sales and the very hard work of our docents and volunteers. For the past several years, our gallery was located at the end of a street with little traffic. We had almost no drop-in visitors; people had to know where they were going in order to find us. We were open only a few days a week, and as you can imagine, we had very few sales. Then, a miracle happened! Along the Mississippi River in Louisiana there are many beautiful antebellum homes.
Houmas House, near Gonzales, is among the most beautiful. The owner, Mr. Kevin Kelly, having seen our operation and our struggles, invited us to move the gallery to Houmas House free of charge! He provided a space for us on his property, and what a difference it has made. We are open 7 days a week. Dozens of visitors come through the gallery daily, and sales have soared. Attached is a picture of our opening day. Our commitment goes on, and the arts are alive and well in Ascension Parish.
