Open Art Studios Opens Their Doors for Tours and Demonstrations
Submitted by Tom Linfield
"I work with many fine volunteers to put on a major arts event each fall. Open Art Studios involves over 125 artists opening their studios to the public for a weekend of studio tours and art demonstrations. The project is designed to created awareness and understanding of the artistic process in a city with a vibrant arts community.
The majority of Madison area artists work full time and do their art on the side, so the OAS event allows them to interact with the public in an intimate way, sharing technique, showing sketchbooks and works in progress, and talking about their artmaking interests and processes.
This is an entirely volunteer event that gathers over 15,000 visitors each year. An exhibition of work by each artist fills all three galleries of our downtown art center for the month before the studio tour weekend. The event is funded by artist contributions of time, money and artwork for a silent auction, in addition to local art grants.
