BookPALS: Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools
I am a BookPALS reader for this national Screen Actors Guild Foundation organization: Performing Artists for Literacy in Schools. For several years, I've been working with 4th and 5th grade students at a Manhattan Public School. I spend 1 period (45 minutes)/week reading a chapter book aloud, which we discuss. It breaks up their school day with something fun, interactive and encourages their creative thinking and debate skills and builds their appreciation for reading and books. The most rewarding moments are when, perhaps resistant at the beginning of the year, at the end of the year, they give me thank-you cards featuring all the books we read, their favorites, how much they enjoyed our time together. And when each week they excitedly tell me about new books they've read. It's an important program that merges artists (professional actors) giving back to the community and nurturing learning and the future generations.
